How to install a Werzalit windowsill: step by step

A Werzalit sill is easy to cut and install and needs no special care. Here is how to do it right.

What you need

  • a tape measure, a pencil and a spirit level;
  • a wood saw or a circular saw with fine teeth;
  • mounting foam and silicone or acrylic sealant;
  • support pads for the sill and end caps in the colour of the sill.

Step 1. Measure the opening

Measure the length of the opening between the reveals and its depth, from the window frame to the edge of the wall. The sill should project 30–50 mm beyond the wall, so choose the width as the depth of the opening plus this overhang. Take the length with a 20–30 mm allowance on each side if the sill goes into the side reveals, and exactly the size of the opening if it sits between them. The catalogue and calculator help you pick the width and series. If you prefer not to measure yourself, order measuring.

Step 2. Cut the sill

Werzalit sills cut easily with a hand saw or a circular saw. Mark the cutting line with a pencil and cut with the decorative side up using a fine-toothed blade so the surface does not chip. It is more convenient to order cutting from us: cutting to length is included in the price per metre, and cut-outs for the reveal, radiator and grille are made according to the service price list.

Step 3. Install the sill

  1. Test-fit the sill and check the overhang and the gaps.
  2. Lay it on support pads and set it level.
  3. Fill the gap under the window profile and under the sill with mounting foam. Apply it sparingly, it expands.
  4. While the foam sets, hold the sill down with a weight without disturbing the level.
  5. Trim the excess foam and seal the joints with sealant. Close the ends with end caps.

If the sill is longer than a standard blank, the parts are joined with a connector.

How to care for the sill

The Werzalit surface withstands moisture and household detergents, so a damp cloth is enough. The sill tolerates brief heating up to 180 °C, but it is still better to put hot cookware on a stand.

Common mistakes

  • too large an overhang or none at all: the nose should protect the wall under the sill;
  • too much mounting foam that lifts the sill;
  • open ends: close them with end caps;
  • cutting by eye without exact measuring.
